I could only hope that Jem would outrun the tire and me, or that I would be stopped by a bump in the sidewalk. I could not put out my hands to stop, they were wedged between my chest and knees. Ground, sky and houses melted into a mad palette, my ears throbbed, I was suffocating. He did, by pushing the tire down the sidewalk with all force in his body. Until it happened I did not realize Jem was offended by my contradicting him on Hot Steams, and that he was patiently awaiting an opportunity to reward me. Jem arbitrated, awarded me first push with extra time for Dill, and I folded myself inside the tire. ‘I’m first,” I said.ĭill said he ought to be first, he just got here. I ran to the back yard and pulled an old car tire from under the house. I would think it was kind of funny if I saw it myself. I think that he saw Jem push her really hard and crash, and he thought it was funny.
I think that the laugh that Scout heard was Boo Radley. Response: What was the laugh that Scout heard? Then they decided they would pretend that they were the Radleys, which they continued to play throughout the summer, until Atticus saw them. First, Scout wanted to be pushed in the tire, but she got pushed into the Radleys yard, and heard somebody laugh from inside the house. Within the next couple of days, Dill came, and they began wondering what to play. They were wondering whose they were, why they put them in there, and what to do with them. When they were walking home on the last day of school, Scout was showing Jem where she got the gum, and they found two old pennies. Scout and Jem began discussing how they were looking forward to summer, and to Dill. When Jem got home, he asked Scout where she got it and she told him, to which he responded by telling her to spit it out. She went over to examine it, and found there was a hole with two pieces of gum in it. On one of the trees on the outskirts of the Radley place, she saw some tinfoil. Everyday Scout ran past the Radley place, since she was by herself, but one time something caught her eye.
Then we found out she got let out 30 minutes before Jem. In the beginning of the chapter, Scout expressed that she was not fond of the new teaching method at her school.
